I made a trip yesterday morning to an area in the heart of New Orleans that is a land-locked bayou near the City Park. The bayou used to be open up to Lake Pontchartrain but is closed off by some flood/water control structures.
It's fresh water and holds a fair amount of bass and other freshwater species. A couple years ago, some redfish were stocked into the area for a local university study. Several were implanted with radio tags. Additionally, this area was flooded in Katrina and some wild reds may have made it in there with the flood waters.
I was fishing bass yesterday with a 4" Texas-rigged Power Worm and caught one small bass. I then got a hit from a solid fish. After being towed around for about 15 minutes, I managed to land a nice 34" red. I was using a small spinning outfit with 10lb Berkley Nanofil line and it was quite a battle. The fish did not have a tag. After a quick photo, the fish was released.
Very nice!!
