The post cold front conditions this past weekend, were much better than I had anticipated. Late Friday morning, I launched from a new area for me, I had planed to fish a small river near my house, with hopes to hit some docks. That did not pan out, the river was much more shallow than I could see from Google maps. The only thing I found in there were a couple dead mullet. So, "plan B", I turned around and made my way across the inter-coastal to a set of spoil islands. The bite was slow at first, a few small trout on the DOA #313 Gold Glitter Shrimp. I set off drifting the edge of the flat and the ICW, that is where things started to heat up. I stumbled upon a school of Bluefish, an awesomely powerful fish. They were extremely ferocious, they tore through four or five of my shrimp, consistently, just as it hit the water. I decided to change things up a bit and switched to a Mirrolure, Top Pup. What an insane sight to see, a school of fish just terrorizing my top water lure. I fished them for about thirty minutes and decided it was time to find another species.
I left the edge of the ICW and headed for the backside of the spoil, where I could see some mullet activity. I switched back to the DOA shrimp and worked, what felt like the entire school, with not even so much as a single strike. I tried every color shrimp I had, no luck. Feeling a bit discouraged I decided to switch to the DOA Cal Shad #406 Arkansas glow and a 1/4oz jig head, success! On my first cast I hooked into a slot red. This action continued for nearly 1-1/2 hours. The sun was starting to come down, sadly I had to depart the red fish party.
Fish total for the day six Bluefish, five red fish, and an easy dozen plus trout. Keep those lines tight!!!
