The winter months have fast approached us, fortunately it has been very mild. We are still seeing temperatures in the upper 70s.  For the inshore fisherman this has been an ideal first month of 2012. If Speckled Trout is your thing, then you should have no problem finding those "gators" hanging out on the edge of the flats. I spent the weekend targeting them and was very successful. They were very active in the 4-6 foot range and just annihilating top water plugs and the DOA #351 Rootbeer / chartreuse shad tail  on a 1/8oz jig head. They averaged 18" with some pushing the 25" plus range. I'm not sure what it is with trout, but when the cooler water comes, something internal happens to them, it's like a switch is turned on and they grow some serious shoulders. These trout, turn into some great light tackle drag burners. Trout are also great table fare, just remember to check your local regulations.

   Trout are not the only thing biting right now, the Pompano bite has been pretty good also. They have been running in the deep sandy troughs/ cuts where the tidal flow cuts through the grass beds. Although not a species I have targeted, mostly just a by-catch, they are another popular dinner fish. They can be caught using the Docs jigs in bright colors, a favorite is the yellow Goofy jig with a pink teaser. This combination, is my go-to for sandy bottom fishing.
